How Often Should a Business Website Actually Be Updated

By Mohamed Eltoukhy, founder of EVOGENCY ·

Different parts of a website age at different speeds, and treating all of it the same, either never touching it or redesigning constantly, both waste effort.

A simple schedule keeps your site accurate, secure, and competitive without turning it into a constant project.

Update content regularly

Hours, pricing, service details, and photos should be checked and updated as soon as anything changes, since outdated information actively costs trust and business.

Holiday hours are a common miss. Update them on the site and on your Google Business Profile at the same time so they never disagree.

Monthly: quick checks

Once a month, click through the main pages on your phone. Test the contact form and phone links. Check Google Search Console for errors. Add a new project photo, review, or update if you have one.

If your site runs on a platform that needs software updates, this is a good rhythm for those too.

Quarterly: content review

Every few months, read your service pages with fresh eyes. Are they still accurate? Do they answer the questions customers are asking on the phone? Is there a service you now offer that doesn't have a page?

Update pages when something meaningful changes, not just to change a date. Google looks for real, substantial updates rather than cosmetic ones.

Yearly: bigger picture

Once a year, look at what's working. Which pages bring in leads? Which get traffic but no calls? How does your site compare to competitors? Is the site still fast on mobile? This is also a good time to refresh team photos and your About page.

Revisit the design every few years

A full visual and technical review every two to three years catches the kind of drift that accumulates slowly: a slightly outdated look, new features competitors have that you don't, and technology that's quietly become outdated underneath.

That doesn't always mean a full rebuild. Sometimes targeted improvements are enough.

Signs it's time now

Your site is slow on phones, hard for you to update, missing services you offer, or you're embarrassed to send people to it. Any of these is a reason not to wait for the calendar.

The simple schedule

Update facts immediately, check monthly, review content quarterly, look at the big picture yearly, and reassess the design every few years.
