How to Market a Business With Little to No Marketing Budget

By Mohamed Eltoukhy, founder of EVOGENCY ·

A limited budget doesn't mean no options. Some of the highest leverage marketing steps cost time and consistency rather than money.

Here's where to put your time when you can't put much money anywhere.

A complete, accurate Google Business Profile

This is free, and a genuinely complete profile with real photos and consistent information is one of the highest impact things a new business can do before spending a dollar elsewhere.

Fill in every field that applies, choose the right categories, add photos of your work and team, and post updates regularly. For a local business, this is often where most new customers first see you.

Ask every customer for a review

A consistent habit of asking, at zero cost, builds the kind of social proof that eventually does real marketing work on its own, long after the business could afford paid advertising.

Use your profile's direct review link so leaving one takes a minute. Reply to every review.

Referrals and word of mouth

Tell every satisfied customer you'd appreciate referrals. Some businesses offer a thank you to customers who refer someone. That's fine for referrals, just never for reviews, which Google doesn't allow you to reward.

Stay in touch with past customers with an occasional helpful message. People refer businesses they remember.

Partner with complementary businesses

A plumber and a remodeler, a salon and a wedding planner, a real estate agent and a home inspector. Businesses that serve the same customers without competing can recommend each other at no cost.

Show up in your community

Local business groups, chamber events, neighborhood associations, and community Facebook or Nextdoor groups are places to be helpful and visible. Answer questions generously without constantly selling. People remember who helped.

Useful content on your own site

Write clear answers to the questions customers ask most. It costs only time, helps visitors trust you, and can bring in search traffic over months. One genuinely helpful page is worth more than ten generic ones.

Free listings beyond Google

Claim your business on Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, and relevant industry directories. Keep the details identical everywhere.

Invest time wisely

Pick two or three of these and do them consistently rather than trying everything once. When money frees up, a strong foundation makes paid marketing far more effective.
