Hiring an In House Marketer vs. an Agency: What Actually Makes Sense

By Mohamed Eltoukhy, founder of EVOGENCY ·

The choice between hiring an in house marketer and working with an agency usually comes down to breadth of skill needed versus the cost of a full time salary.

Both can work well. The right answer depends on your size, budget, and what kind of marketing actually moves your business.

An in house hire is one person

A single marketing hire, however talented, is unlikely to be equally strong at SEO, web design, content, and paid ads all at once. Something usually gets less attention.

There's also the full cost: salary, benefits, tools, training, and management time. If that person leaves, momentum and knowledge can leave with them.

What in house does well

An employee knows your business deeply, is available every day, and can handle the constant small tasks: social posts, events, customer emails, and coordinating with vendors. For businesses with lots of ongoing content or community marketing, that presence is valuable.

An agency brings a wider bench

Working with an agency gives access to a broader range of specialized skills without the cost of hiring separately for each one, which is often the more practical choice for a small or mid sized business.

You also get experience across many clients, which helps agencies spot what works faster.

What to watch for with agencies

Ask who actually does the work and whether it's outsourced. Be wary of long contracts, vague reports, or guaranteed rankings. Google's own advice on hiring SEO help warns against providers who promise specific rankings or won't explain what they're doing.

Make sure you own your accounts, website, and data.

The hybrid many businesses use

A common setup is one in house person who knows the business and coordinates everything, plus an agency for specialized work like SEO, web development, or ads. The internal person keeps things moving, and the agency brings depth.

Questions to decide

What marketing actually drives your customers? How much work is there every week? Do you need a range of skills or depth in one? Can you manage a marketer effectively? What's your total budget, including benefits and tools?

The honest take

Small businesses often get more for their money from a focused agency. Growing businesses often benefit from adding an internal coordinator. Very large marketing needs usually justify a full team.
