How AI Overviews Are Changing Local Search
By Mohamed Eltoukhy, founder of EVOGENCY ·
Google's AI Overviews now answer a growing share of searches directly at the top of the results page, sometimes before a user ever scrolls to the traditional list of links or the map pack.
For local businesses, that raises a fair question: does this change what it takes to get found? The honest answer is that it changes the look of the results page more than the fundamentals behind it.
What AI Overviews are
An AI Overview is a generated summary that appears for some searches, with links to the sources it drew from. Google says these features are rooted in its core search ranking and quality systems, and they pull from pages that are already indexed and eligible to appear in search.
What this changes for local businesses
Being mentioned inside that summary is a new kind of visibility that sits above traditional rankings, which means the content and structure a business publishes needs to be clear enough for an AI system to extract accurately, not just readable by a person.
For informational searches, like how to fix a running toilet, some people may get their answer without clicking. For hiring searches, like finding a plumber nearby, people still need to choose and contact a business, and local results remain central.
The fundamentals still apply
A complete Google Business Profile, real reviews, and clear, accurate website content remain the foundation this is built on. Nothing about AI Overviews replaces the basics, it just adds a new layer on top of them.
Google has said directly that there's no special optimization required for AI features beyond good SEO practice.
Clear, helpful content wins
Pages that answer real questions directly, explain services clearly, and include specific, accurate details are easier for both people and AI systems to use. Unique knowledge, like how Florida humidity affects AC systems, is more valuable than generic advice anyone could write.
Consistency across the web
Make sure your business name, hours, services, and contact information are accurate and consistent on your website, your Business Profile, and major directories. Conflicting information makes it harder for any system to describe your business correctly.
Measure what matters
Watch calls, direction requests, and leads, not just clicks. If informational clicks dip but calls hold steady or grow, the business is fine. Search Console and your Business Profile performance data show the trends.
The takeaway
AI Overviews change the layout, not the rules. Strong local fundamentals and genuinely helpful content keep a business visible in both.
