How ChatGPT Finds and Recommends Local Businesses

By Mohamed Eltoukhy, founder of EVOGENCY ·

More people now ask ChatGPT questions they used to type into Google. "Who's the best dentist in Winter Park for nervous patients?" or "What's a good roofing company in Orlando?" When ChatGPT answers with names, a natural question for any business owner is how to become one of them.

There's no official recipe, but the way these tools work gives clear clues.

Two ways ChatGPT knows things

ChatGPT can answer from what it learned during training, which is a snapshot of the web from the past. For local businesses, that knowledge is often thin or out of date.

It can also search the web in real time. When it does, it pulls current pages, listings, and reviews, then writes an answer and usually shows the sources it used. For local recommendations, that live search is where most of the useful answers come from.

Where the live answers come from

When ChatGPT searches, it uses a search index and then reads the pages it finds. OpenAI has said ChatGPT search works with third party search providers, and Bing has long been one of them. That means your visibility on Bing matters, not just on Google.

It also reads review sites, directories, local news, and your own website. A business mentioned consistently across trustworthy sources is easier for an AI to describe with confidence.

What helps

First, make sure search engines can find and read your site. If your site loads content only after heavy scripts run, some AI crawlers may see very little. Plain, readable pages work best.

Second, get set up in Bing Webmaster Tools and keep your Bing Places listing accurate. Many businesses have never looked at Bing at all.

Third, keep your name, address, phone number, and services consistent everywhere they appear. Mixed information makes AI answers vague or wrong.

Fourth, build real reviews on major platforms, and keep your Google Business Profile complete, since many sources draw from it.

Fifth, put clear, quotable facts on your website. A first sentence like "Bright Smile Dental is a family dental practice in Winter Park, Florida, known for gentle care for anxious patients" is exactly the kind of line an AI can lift.

What doesn't help

Paying for fake mentions, stuffing pages with phrases, or creating dozens of thin pages won't earn recommendations. AI tools are designed to favor sources that look trustworthy, and spammy content tends to undercut you.

Check what AI says about you

Ask ChatGPT and other AI tools about your business by name and about your service in your city. If the information is wrong, find where it likely came from, often an outdated directory listing or an old page, and fix the source.

The bottom line

AI recommendations are built on the same foundation as good search visibility, accurate listings, real reviews, and clear content. Our AI search service checks how your business shows up across these tools and fixes the gaps.
