SEO for Locksmiths, Standing Out in One of Google's Toughest Categories
By Mohamed Eltoukhy, founder of EVOGENCY ·
Few local categories have a worse reputation online than locksmiths. For years, search results have been crowded with lead generation operations posing as local businesses, fake addresses, and bait and switch pricing. Google has responded with extra scrutiny for the category, and customers have learned to be suspicious.
For a genuine, local locksmith, that history creates an opportunity. The business that looks clearly real and trustworthy stands out.
Expect extra verification
Google applies stricter checks to locksmith listings than to many other categories, and verification can involve more steps. Follow the process carefully and use your real business name, real phone number, and a real address. If you serve customers at their location, set up as a service area business and hide your address rather than inventing a storefront.
Shortcuts like virtual offices or multiple listings for the same business are a fast route to suspension in this category.
Look real at every step
Customers are looking for proof you're legitimate. Show your real name, photos of you and your vehicles, your license if your state requires one, and proof of insurance. A short story about your business and how long you've served the area helps people feel safe.
Be upfront about pricing
The biggest complaint about bad locksmiths is a low quote over the phone and a much higher bill at the door. Explain how you price, including service call fees, labor, and parts, and give typical ranges for common jobs like lockouts and rekeys if you can. Transparency is a powerful differentiator in this industry.
Pages for each service
Lockouts, rekeying, lock changes, car keys and fobs, safes, and commercial access control are all different searches with different customers. Give each its own page, explaining what's involved and roughly what affects cost.
Emergency pages that work
Lockout searches are urgent. Put the phone number at the top, say clearly what hours you answer, and give an honest arrival time range. If you don't truly offer service around the clock, don't claim it.
Reviews matter even more here
In a category full of fakes, real reviews from real customers are a major trust signal. Ask every customer for a review after the job. Reviews that mention fair pricing and the person who helped them are exactly what new customers want to read.
Where to start
Get your profile verified correctly, put real photos and credentials on your website, explain your pricing honestly, and ask every customer for a review. If you'd like a check on your listing and site, our free audit covers both.
