ChatGPT Search vs. Perplexity vs. Google AI Overviews: What's Actually Different
By Mohamed Eltoukhy, founder of EVOGENCY ·
ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews all answer questions directly, but they pull from different sources and reach different audiences, which matters for a business trying to show up in all of them.
You don't need a separate strategy for each. But understanding how they differ helps explain why the fundamentals matter so much.
Google AI Overviews sits inside existing search
This one appears directly inside a regular Google search, which means the same local SEO fundamentals a business already relies on directly influence whether it gets included.
Google says AI Overviews draw on its core ranking systems and link to supporting pages. For local searches, the map results and Business Profiles are still right there on the page.
ChatGPT and Perplexity are their own destinations
These tools are used as standalone research assistants rather than a traditional search box, and they weigh clarity, structure, and consistency of information across the web slightly differently than Google's own ranking system.
Both can search the web and cite sources in their answers. People often use them for research and comparison, like asking what to look for in a contractor or which options fit a specific need.
Where their information comes from
Each tool uses its own mix of web search, partner data, and its underlying model's knowledge. The details change often, and the companies don't publish exact recipes. What's consistent is that they favor information that's clear, specific, and corroborated by multiple trustworthy sources.
Who uses which
Google still handles the overwhelming majority of local searches, especially "near me" searches with immediate intent. AI assistants tend to show up earlier in the decision, when people are researching or comparing. Both stages matter for a business, but Google remains where most local customers make the call.
What helps across all three
Accurate, consistent business details everywhere you're listed. A website that clearly states what you do, where, and for whom. Pages that directly answer common questions. Genuine reviews on major platforms. These give every system the same clear picture of your business.
Check what they say about you
Ask each tool about your business and your services in your area. Note what's accurate, what's missing, and what's wrong. Wrong details often trace back to an outdated listing or an unclear page somewhere, which you can fix.
Keep expectations realistic
No one can guarantee a mention in any of them. Answers vary by question and change over time. Focus on being the clearest, most trustworthy source of information about your own business.
The takeaway
Google AI Overviews rewards strong SEO directly. ChatGPT and Perplexity reward clear, consistent, well supported information. The same solid foundation serves all three.
