Holiday Marketing for Local Businesses Without Discounting Everything
By Mohamed Eltoukhy, founder of EVOGENCY ·
Every November and December, local businesses feel pressure to run a big sale. Big chains slash prices, inboxes fill with discount codes, and it seems like the only way to compete is to give money away. For most small businesses, that's a trap. Discounts cut into thin margins and train customers to wait for the next sale.
Here are better ways to make the holidays work for you.
Sell what people actually need right now
The holidays create real needs. Homeowners want everything working before family arrives. They want clean carpets, a working oven, safe outdoor lights, and a guest bathroom that doesn't leak. Restaurants see group dinners and parties. Salons see people wanting to look their best for events.
Market to those needs directly. "Get your home guest ready before the holidays" is far more compelling than "15 percent off."
Gift cards and gift packages
Gift cards bring in revenue now and often bring new customers in later. They work for far more than restaurants and spas. A detailing package, a cleaning session, or a maintenance visit makes a useful gift for a parent or a busy friend. Make them easy to buy on your website and mention them everywhere.
Bundles instead of discounts
Rather than cutting the price of one service, bundle two that go together, like a gutter cleaning with a pressure wash, or a facial with an add on treatment. Customers feel they're getting more, and you protect your pricing.
Use a real deadline
A good holiday offer opens and closes. "Book by December 10 to get finished before the holidays" gives people a real reason to act now, and it's true. Avoid fake countdowns or deadlines that quietly reset, because customers notice and trust takes a hit.
Remember your past customers
Your past customers are the easiest people to sell to. A friendly email or text to people who've used you before, with a timely reminder and a simple offer, often outperforms any ad. Only message people who have agreed to hear from you, and make it easy to opt out.
Update your Google profile
Set special holiday hours on your Google Business Profile so customers don't show up to a locked door. Post a short update about your holiday offer or availability. It's free, and people searching for you will see it.
Plan for January
Holiday customers can become year round customers. Have a follow up ready for January, whether it's a thank you, a reminder to book their next visit, or a new year offer.
